Blues Stars Win LMSC Midget B Cup
This past weekend of June 28, the North Van Midget Blue Stars team (Head Coach Peter Powell) came 1st in the Lower Mainland Cup.
The team started off with a bye to the second game on Saturday due to their high standing in the regular season. They ended up losing that game to the North Delta Sunfire 3-2. This meant they had to come up the loser’s bracket starting 9:00 am Sunday.
They won the first game against the Coquitlam Classics, 13-3. The 11 o’clock game was again against the Sunfire, but this time the Stars won the game 6-3. The temperature soared to 34 degrees for their third straight game, the 1:00 Championship. This game was against the undefeated PoCo Ravens, playing their first game of the day.
They played a 7-inning game and defeated the Ravens 3-2 to win the Championship and bring back the Cup to North Van.
The pitching was stellar. Out of 3 games played Sunday, Isla Powell pitched 14 innings and Katie Minion pitched 6. Between the two pitchers only 3 earned runs were allowed. Backcatcher Jennifer Irving showed outstanding control of the games.
On the side of the offence, great clutch hitting by Breaunna Hokanson, Lindsay Van Leeuwen, Katie Minion and Tara Ridley. Superior base-running and bunting skills from Heather Whitlock, Gillian Steel, and Dani Brassington (this years NVGSA Scholarship recipient). Excellent defensive efforts all around and especially significant plays by Samantha Duncan, Erin Gordon, Katie Kessel and Kelsey Connelly.
The team would like to thank Leanne Pickard who came up for the tournament from the Bantam Team the Cardinals and played exceptionally well.
Excellent Base Coaching by Assistant Coaches Tom Irving and Bill Gordon.
The team would like to also thank the Gordon’s not only for Scorekeeping and Coaching help, but for the sandwiches, ice, water, towels, and generally taking good care of them.
