Umpiring

Anyone interested in becoming an umpire should contact the Umpire in Chief listed on the Executive page.

Umpires will be provided for the following divisions: Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam, Midget, Junior Ladies and Rep. Umpires are scheduled by the Umpire Schedulers listed on the Executive page. If an umpire does not get assigned to your game, please refer to the procedures in the General Rules page of the Handbook section.

The coach of the home team is responsible to ensure that notification of any game cancellation is given to the Umpire Scheduler well in advance of games to allow umpires to be advised or rescheduled as necessary. The latest possible time to cancel a game on the day of the game is 5:00 PM, or 1.5 hours before the scheduled game start time.

Any game incidents or concerns with umpires should be reported to the Umpire In Chief (UIC).

This is a "No Protest" league for all games except the provincial Playdown Tournament and District playoffs. All umpire decisions are final.

Any player, Coach or Manager ejected from a game will be given an automatic one (1) game suspension which will apply to the next game being played by that team.

Umpires have been advised to report such incidents to the UIC for review by the Executive.

Resources

Softball Canada publishes the Umpire Casebook, a manual compiled by umpire members across Canada and edited by members of the Officiating Development Committee of Softball Canada in an effort to assist softball umpires to better understand and interpret the rules of softball. Coaches may download and read the Umpire Casebook to gain a deeper understanding of the rules of the game (but be warned, the Blues will not look kindly on you pulling it out to dispute a call).

More information and resources, including new editions of the Umpire Casebook, can be found under the Officiating section of the Softball Canada website.

Umpire Pay

Umpires are paid between $20 and $30 per game depending on level of certification, experience and whether they are willing to mentor junior umpires.

The NSGFA will reimburse umpires for their annual clinic fees, and we provide protective equipment and other gear (not including the umpire uniform and shoes). Umpires also enjoy a 50% discount at the McCartney concession. Umpires may also receive additional benefits for working tournaments.
